Kevin Barnes has never shied away from oversharing, and aethermead, the 20th album from of Montreal, takes that candor somewhere new, pressed on clear vinyl in a gatefold sleeve with a digital download card.
Released in 2026, three decades into the project, the record plays largely as a breakup album about rebirth, written after the end of a long engagement and a move from Vermont to Brooklyn. Barnes has called it confessional to an almost embarrassing degree, and its title borrows from the Nethermead, the corner of Prospect Park where he walks his dog each day.
Core tracks were cut in five days at The Honey Jar in Brooklyn with a live band before Barnes finished the overdubs alone at home, writing, producing and mixing every song himself. That blend of loose ensemble energy and obsessive bedroom detail runs through lead single "When," the bluntly titled "Listen to Music and Cry" and the wry, psychoanalytic "Lacan in the Family."
The melodies remain playful and glam-tinged, but the lyrics cut closer to the bone than usual, and the honesty is disarming.
Three decades in, it is a fascinating and brave late-career turn, and for anyone who loves bittersweet indie pop, it proves heartbreak can still sound like glitter.
