O.A.R.'s Risen celebrates its 25th anniversary with this green vinyl edition of the 2001 album that carried the Maryland band from college crowds toward much bigger stages.
Formed by high school friends in Rockville, Maryland, O.A.R. built a devoted following the old-fashioned way, through relentless touring and word of mouth on college campuses. Risen, their third studio album, caught them at a pivotal moment, mixing reggae lilt, rootsy rock and saxophone-flecked jams with Marc Roberge's raspy, storytelling vocals.
"Hey Girl" opens the record with easygoing swagger, and "Hold On True" and "Delicate Few" show off the band's gift for sing-along choruses that feel made for summer nights. "Night Shift" leans into the loose, groove-led feel that made their live shows such a draw for so many fans over the years.
There is an unhurried warmth to the playing, the sound of friends who know each other's instincts, and Roberge's lyrics favour hope, loyalty and the road ahead. Even the quieter moments carry a sense of community, as if the audience were already singing along.
For fans who were there the first time, this anniversary pressing is a welcome trip back, and newcomers get a fine introduction to a band with one of America's most loyal live followings.
