The San Antonio band had been grinding for years before this record, and it shows in how purposeful it feels. Frontman Jonny Hawkins framed the album around the gap between reality and the stories we build about it, examining how we relate to the people around us and to our own restless minds. Spoken-word samples from philosopher Alan Watts thread through the interludes, giving the record a reflective, almost conceptual flow.

Produced by the band with Will Hoffman, the sound is heavy and precise, with Hawkins's elastic vocals leaping from melodic croon to full-throated scream. Go to War became the breakout, topping the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and earning Grammy nods for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song, while the album itself was nominated for Best Rock Album. Do You Really Want It? snaps with tight, rhythmic aggression, and Let 'Em Burn and Just Say When show how far the band can stretch between punishing and anthemic.
