Nothing But Thieves came out swinging on Broken Machine, the 2017 second album that took the Essex band to number two on the UK albums chart. This LP includes a download insert.
Formed in Southend-on-Sea, the band had already built a loyal following with their self-titled debut, thanks in no small part to Conor Mason's startling falsetto. For the follow-up they worked with producer Mike Crossey, recording at Ranch Studios in California and Grand Cru in London, and the result is heavier, darker and more ambitious, with riffs that hit harder and lyrics that wrestle openly with anxiety and frustration.
Amsterdam, the lead single, is a pounding, riff-driven anthem built for festival crowds, with Mason pushing his voice to the limit in the chorus. Sorry slows the pace into something bruised and slow-burning, while the title track crackles with nervous energy. I'm Not Made by Design, another single, adds a swaggering edge that shows how far the band had stretched their sound.
Guitarists Joe Langridge-Brown and Dominic Craik give the songs a sharp, muscular bite throughout, and the rhythm section keeps everything locked tight.
For fans of alternative rock with big hooks and real bite, Broken Machine is the record where the band found their full voice and started playing to much bigger rooms.
