NOFX spent three decades as punk's loudest pranksters, and Single Album is the record where Fat Mike lets the jokes slip and the bruises show.
Released in 2021 on Fat Wreck Chords, it arrived five years after First Ditch Effort and was planned as a double album before being trimmed to ten songs, with the rest surfacing later as Double Album. The title is classic NOFX deadpan, but the material underneath is some of the heaviest the band ever wrote, circling addiction, depression and the friends the scene has lost.
"The Big Drag" sets the tone, warning early that this will not be a sprint through the usual punchlines. "I Love You More Than I Hate Me" pairs a bouncing melody with brutally honest self-assessment, while "Grieve Soto" pays tribute to a fallen punk friend with real tenderness. "Fish in a Gun Barrel" proves the old satirical bite is still intact. Eric Melvin, El Hefe and Smelly still play with the old precision, so even the darkest lines land with a crooked grin.
It is NOFX at their most human, still fast and still funny, but finally willing to be vulnerable on record. Longtime fans will hear how far the songwriting has traveled, and newcomers get an unvarnished snapshot of a band in reflective mood.
