Nina Simone & Her Friends brings together three of the great jazz voices of the 1950s on one remastered LP, presented here as a UK import.
Assembled by Bethlehem Records after Simone, Carmen McRae and Chris Connor had each moved on to other labels, the album pairs Simone recordings from the sessions for her debut Little Girl Blue with earlier sides by McRae and Connor. Simone had no say in its release, yet the result is a fascinating snapshot of three very different singers who passed through the same label at the same moment.
Simone's tracks are the main draw. I Loves You, Porgy, the song that made her name, is all restraint and slow-burning feeling, while African Mailman shows off the classically trained piano that set her apart from almost every singer of her generation.
McRae brings sly sophistication to Old Devil Moon, and Connor's cool, smoky reading of Try A Little Tenderness offers a lovely contrast, unhurried and intimate. Passing between the three, the record plays like an evening at a small New York club where the bill keeps getting better.
For Simone collectors it fills in an early chapter, and for lovers of vocal jazz it is a generous introduction to three distinctive talents, each heard in the first flush of a remarkable career.
