The Essential Nick Heyward is the first vinyl release to cover his entire career, gathering Haircut One Hundred favourites and solo highlights on a green LP, imported from the UK.

Heyward first found fame as the frontman of Haircut One Hundred, whose sharp, sunny guitar pop made them one of the brightest bands of the early 1980s. He went solo soon after, and the decades since have produced a body of work that is warmer and deeper than many people realise. This collection traces that whole arc, reaching from the early hits all the way to his 2017 album Woodland Echoes.

The two Haircut One Hundred tracks are the obvious starting point. "Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)" still bristles with nervy, funky energy, and "Love Plus One" remains one of the most joyful singles of its era. From there, "Whistle Down The Wind" shows the gentler, more reflective songwriter that emerged in his early solo years, while "Kite" from the 1990s finds him in brighter, guitar-driven form.

Fourteen songs is not a lot of room for a career this long, which makes the selection feel carefully weighed.
