Nelson Riddle's Batman soundtrack is 1966 in a nutshell: brassy, cheeky and as bright as a comic book panel.
Riddle was already a legend for his arrangements behind Frank Sinatra when he took on the music for the Batman television series, the camp, colorful hit starring Adam West and Burt Ward. This album collects his music from the show, built around Neal Hefti's famous theme and stuffed with swinging big band cues and dramatic stabs that underline every punch and cliffhanger.
"Batman Theme" opens with that unforgettable riff, all bass, brass and pure momentum. "Batusi a-Go! Go!" captures the dance the show made famous, "To the Batmobile!" races along on propulsive horns, and "Batman Riddles the Riddler! (Hi Diddle Riddle)" leans into the villains' mischievous spirit with sly, sneaky orchestration.
Twelve tracks long and packed with exclamation marks, it is pure pop-art fun, equally at home on a lounge playlist or a comic fan's shelf. Riddle treats the whole thing with a wink, but the playing is first-class, with crisp horns and a rhythm section that never stops swinging.
