Tonight's the Night is Neil Young's rawest, most harrowing album, a 1975 wake for lost friends that still sounds like it was cut long after midnight.

Recorded in 1973 after the overdose deaths of Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten and roadie Bruce Berry, the album sat unreleased for two years. Coming after the success of Harvest, it was the opposite of a commercial move: ragged by design, boozy and grieving, played live in the studio by a loose crew including Nils Lofgren, Ben Keith, Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina.

The title track bookends the record, its stark refrain naming Bruce Berry outright, while "Tired Eyes" half speaks the story of a drug deal gone fatally wrong over aching pedal steel. "Mellow My Mind" finds Young's voice cracking at the top of its range, and nobody bothered to fix it, which is exactly the point.

"Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown", a 1970 live recording with Whitten singing lead, lands as a ghostly reminder of what was lost, his voice suddenly present among the mourners.

Part of the dark run of records fans now call the Ditch Trilogy, it is not an easy listen, but it may be the most honest album Young ever made. Few records capture grief this nakedly, and it rewards a quiet room and full attention.
