Nas turned grief into some of his most personal music on God's Son, his 2002 album, presented here as a limited 2LP import from Italy.

The record was shaped by the death of his mother, Ann Jones, earlier that year, and by the closing rounds of his very public feud with Jay-Z. Those twin pressures pushed Nas towards unusually open, reflective writing, balancing street sermons and battle-tested bravado with moments of real tenderness.

Salaam Remi handled much of the production, flipping the Incredible Bongo Band's Apache into the swaggering drums of Made You Look and building I Can around a children's chorus and Beethoven's Für Elise. Eminem produced the brooding The Cross, and Dance, dedicated to his mother, remains one of the most affecting songs in his catalogue.

Guest spots from Alicia Keys and a posthumous appearance from 2Pac widen the canvas without ever pulling focus from Nas himself, whose storytelling here is as sharp as anything he recorded in the decade.

God's Son sits between the comeback fire of Stillmatic and the sprawl of Street's Disciple, and it remains the most emotionally direct record of that run. On two LPs, its mix of grief and defiance gets the space it needs.
