Nearly two decades in the making, Light-Years finally delivers the full-length Nas and DJ Premier album fans spent years asking for, laid out across two LPs.

Released in 2025 as the closing chapter of Mass Appeal's Legend Has It series, it reunites the partnership that shaped parts of Illmatic in 1994. Premier produced every track, and some of the songs were recorded years ago, back when the project was first announced, so the record feels like a long conversation picked back up rather than a nostalgia trip.

"NY State of Mind Pt. 3" extends one of hip-hop's most storied lineages, with Nas at his most vividly observant over Premier's hard-knocking drums. "My Story Your Story" brings back longtime collaborator AZ, reuniting two voices who first traded verses on Illmatic, and "It's Time" features the Steve Miller Band in an unlikely but thrilling crossover that somehow makes perfect sense.

It is that rare long-awaited album that sounds unhurried rather than overworked, built on chemistry rather than hype. Premier's beats leave plenty of space for Nas to think out loud, and the pairing feels as natural as it did three decades ago. Boom-bap purists will find plenty to rewind, and plenty more to argue about.
