My Bloody Valentine's Isn't Anything is where the haze first rolled in, a debut album that bent guitar music out of shape. This remastered edition arrives in a gatefold jacket as a Holland import.
Released in 1988 on Creation, it caught Kevin Shields, Bilinda Butcher, Debbie Googe and Colm Ó Cíosóig at the moment they stopped sounding like their influences and started sounding like nobody else. The jangly indie pop of their earlier singles gave way to something woozier and far stranger, laying the groundwork for Loveless and the wave of shoegaze bands that followed.
Shields' guitar work is the star, all warped, bending chords that seem to slide in and out of tune, but the songs have real bite as well. "Soft as Snow (But Warm Inside)" opens the record on a lurching, off-kilter pulse, "Feed Me with Your Kiss" is about as close as the band ever came to a straight-ahead rock stomper, and "Lose My Breath" drifts by in a hushed, dreamy blur. Butcher and Shields trade soft vocals that sit inside the noise rather than on top of it.
It remains one of the great left turns in British indie, a record that still sounds slightly dangerous decades on. For anyone who knows Loveless by heart, this is where the story really starts.
