Muse go big, loud and gloriously paranoid on Will Of The People, their ninth studio album, presented here on colored vinyl.
Released in 2022 and produced by the band themselves, the record took shape between Los Angeles and London while the world seemed to wobble on its axis. A pandemic, wildfires, mass protests and rising authoritarianism all fed into Matt Bellamy's lyrics, and the trio answered that anxiety the only way they know how, with enormous riffs and even bigger choruses.
Bellamy described the album as a greatest hits collection made entirely of new songs, and the genre-hopping backs him up. The title track "Will Of The People" stomps along on a glam rock strut with a chanted refrain built for stadiums, while "Compliance" glides on glossy synth-pop. "Kill Or Be Killed" swings the other way entirely, unleashing some of the heaviest guitar work in the Muse catalogue.
Then there is "You Make Me Feel Like It's Halloween", a gleefully camp slice of horror-movie organ and pulsing eighties synths, proof that the band have not lost their sense of humour amid all the doom.
It is a compact, wildly theatrical record from a band still happy to throw every idea they have at the wall, and the colored vinyl gives those big moments a suitably bold home.
