Mumford & Sons come out swinging on Prizefighter, their sixth studio album, pressed here on white colored vinyl. It sounds like a band that has rediscovered the thrill of a crowded room.

The songs arrived in a rush, more than the group had written in years, and the record was cut in just ten days at Aaron Dessner's Long Pond studio in upstate New York. Dessner, who first worked with them on Wilder Mind, co-produced alongside Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett and Ted Dwane, and the speed shows in the best way: loose, warm and refreshingly unfussy.

It is also the most open-doored Mumford record yet. Chris Stapleton lends his gravel to opener Here, Hozier trades lines on Rubber Band Man, and Justin Vernon adds his voice to the title track Prizefighter. Gracie Abrams turns up on Badlands, while The Banjo Song brings back the old stomp with fresh grit.

Even with all those guests, the band's own identity never blurs. Acoustic guitars sit up close in the mix, the harmonies swell like a pub singalong at closing time, and the rhythm section knows exactly when to hit hard and when to step aside.

For anyone who fell for the fire of their early records, this white pressing is a welcome reminder that the fight never really left them.
