Mudhoney knocked out most of Five Dollar Bob's Mock Cooter Stew in under an hour, and this scrappy 1993 EP sounds gloriously like it. This limited reissue comes on colored vinyl.
Released on Reprise between Piece of Cake and the band's next full album, the seven-track set was a quick way of getting new songs to fans. Produced by Mudhoney with Kurt Bloch, its fresh material was cut in a single evening session at Hanszek Audio in Ballard, Washington, while two older tracks came from earlier sessions with Conrad Uno at Egg Studios.
In the Blood opens with a grimy, stomping riff and Mark Arm's trademark snarl. No Song III keeps the fuzz thick and the attitude loose, Deception Pass charges ahead with garage-punk urgency, and Make It Now Again revisits a Piece of Cake track with extra grit and swagger.
Steve Turner's guitar sounds wonderfully overdriven throughout, and the rhythm section of Matt Lukin and Dan Peters plays like a band that has done this a thousand times in sweaty clubs.
It is short, sharp and proudly unpolished, a perfect snapshot of Seattle's great garage-punk survivors in their prime. For grunge collectors, it fills a fun, noisy gap between the band's albums.
