Muddy Waters' The Real Folk Blues returns on 180-gram vinyl as part of the Chess Acoustic Sounds Series, gathering nearly two decades of Chicago blues sides into one commanding LP.

Chess first issued the collection in 1966, aiming it at the young listeners caught up in the folk boom, and it launched a whole run of Real Folk Blues titles. Drawn from singles cut between 1947 and 1964, it traces Muddy's path from stark, Delta-rooted recordings to the electric band sound that would shake up popular music.

"Gypsy Woman", his very first single for Aristocrat in 1947, carries the stark, haunted feel of his earliest Chicago sessions, while "Rollin' and Tumblin'" rumbles with hypnotic, slide-driven menace and a groove that refuses to let go.

"Mannish Boy" is pure swagger, its stop-time riff stomping out a defiant declaration, and "Forty Days and Forty Nights" shows his band firing on all cylinders. Little Walter, Otis Spann, Jimmy Rogers and Willie Dixon are among the players who pass through these tracks.

Inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2017, the album remains as good a doorway into Muddy's world as exists, and this heavyweight pressing lets those old grooves land with real weight.
