Muddy Waters went acoustic long before it was fashionable on Folk Singer, his 1964 album, here on 180 gram vinyl in the Chess Acoustic Sounds Series.

By the early 1960s Muddy had electrified Chicago blues and helped lay the foundations of rock and roll. With the folk revival booming, Chess sent him back to his roots: just his voice and guitar, with a young Buddy Guy on second acoustic guitar and Willie Dixon on upright bass, keeping things spare and close. Recorded in 1963, the sessions captured the Mississippi Delta still running deep in his bones.

"My Home Is in the Delta" opens with Muddy's voice and guitar locked in an intimate, bone-dry dialogue. "Good Morning Little School Girl" rolls along with a loose, easy swing, "Cold Weather Blues" is slow and shivering, and "Feel Like Going Home" revisits one of his earliest signature tunes with heavy, dignified gravity.

The recording itself is famously close and natural, so every string buzz and breath seems to be happening right there in the room with you.

This is the purest portrait of one of the towering figures of the blues, stripped of amplifiers and studio polish, and a cornerstone for any collection that takes the music's roots seriously.
