Mr. Bungle's Disco Volante is a gloriously unhinged 1995 album, and this clear light blue double LP gives its flying-saucer weirdness a suitably cosmic glow.
Released on Warner Bros., the second album from Mike Patton, Trey Spruance, Trevor Dunn and their bandmates left behind the funk-metal carnival of their debut for something far wilder. The title, Italian for flying saucer, nods to the yacht in Thunderball, and the music often plays like the soundtrack to a film nobody would dare to finance.
Everyone I Went to High School With Is Dead opens the record on a deeply unsettling note, and Desert Search for Techno Allah fuses Arabic melody with pounding electronics. Violenza Domestica, meanwhile, plays out like an Italian film noir sung with operatic menace, every twist delivered with a perfectly straight face.
Elsewhere the band leaps between jazz, klezmer, musique concrète, death metal and easy listening, often inside a single song. It's disorienting and darkly funny, yet played with ferocious precision by musicians who clearly knew exactly how far they could push things before it all fell apart.
For adventurous listeners, this remains a cult classic that rewards repeat spins, keeps revealing new surprises in every corner, and sounds even stranger at full volume.
