Mother Mother turn heartbreak into a dance-floor confession on Dance and Cry, the Vancouver band's 2018 album, presented here as a Canadian import.
Their seventh studio record was written entirely by frontman Ryan Guldemond, who also co-produced it with Ben Kaplan. Working alongside his sister Molly Guldemond, Jasmin Parkin, Ali Siadat and Mike Young, he pushes the band's quirky indie rock toward bigger, more emotionally direct territory. The concept is right there in the title: songs about falling apart that still insist on moving your feet, a balance the group handles with characteristic wit and theatrical flair.
"I Must Cry Out Loud" opens with a burst of cathartic release, setting the tone for an album that refuses to hide its feelings. The title track follows with a buoyant, chant-ready chorus, and "Get Up", released as the single, keeps the momentum high. Closer "Keep" brings the energy down to something tender and reflective, letting the album land softly after all that motion.
Dance and Cry arrived shortly before a new generation discovered the band online, and it captures them at their most open-hearted. Anyone who came to Mother Mother through that resurgence will find it a vivid, rewarding next step beyond the cult favourites, and it holds together beautifully as a front-to-back listen.
