After years of shelved plans and shifting titles, Morrissey's Make-Up Is a Lie finally arrives as his fourteenth solo studio album, pressed here on blue vinyl.

The record carries a long backstory. Announced in 2022 under a different name after his split from Capitol, it was recorded in the south of France, reworked, retitled more than once and eventually released in 2026, marking his return to Sire Records. That patience suits a singer who has never been in a hurry to please anyone, least of all the music industry.

Joe Chiccarelli produces again, his fifth time behind the desk for Morrissey, and old songwriting partner Alain Whyte is back on guitar alongside Jesse Tobias. Notre-Dame, an early single, brings a stately, wistful sweep, Amazona reworks Roxy Music with obvious affection, and Lester Bangs takes its name from the famously combative rock critic. The Monsters of Pig Alley closes the album with a dramatic flourish, the band swelling around that unmistakable croon.

Arch, wounded and wry as ever, Morrissey sounds fully engaged here, still finding new ways to turn private grievance into melody. For collectors following the long arc from The Smiths onward, the blue pressing makes a fitting home for one of his most talked-about late-career records.
