Morcheeba's Big Calm is the sound of trip hop stepping out of the shadows and into the afternoon sun, and this UK import LP brings the 1998 favourite home in style.
The band's second album took the smoky template of their debut and threw the windows open. Brothers Paul and Ross Godfrey sketched the songs on cassette at their home studio before Skye Edwards arrived to give them that unhurried, honeyed voice, and the trio produced the record alongside Pete Norris. It became their big breakthrough in Britain, where its blend of hip-hop beats, folk guitar and lounge soul felt perfectly tuned to the late nineties.
Opener "The Sea" drifts in on a swelling string arrangement, while "Part of the Process" rides a slow, rolling groove that never breaks a sweat. "Blindfold" was first written with a film in mind, and you can hear that cinematic ambition in its sweep. "Let Me See" adds flute and organ to the mix, and Ross scatters sitar, pedal steel and Fender Rhodes across the album like seasoning.
Elsewhere, a burst of Jamaican toasting and a guest rap nudge the mood toward dub and boom bap without ever disturbing the calm.
It is a record built for low lights and long evenings, and it still sounds remarkably fresh on wax.
