Blessed Are the Sick is the record where Morbid Angel added grandeur to their fury, a 1991 death metal classic that trades pure velocity for something darker and more stately.
Arriving two years after the ferocious Altars of Madness, the Florida band's second album was recorded at Morrisound in Tampa with engineer Tom Morris and produced by the band themselves. Guitarist and chief composer Trey Azagthoth dedicated it to Mozart, and that classical ambition shows in the brief instrumental interludes threaded through the running order. Jean Delville's painting Les Trésors de Satan on the cover only adds to the air of decadent menace.
David Vincent's commanding growl sits atop riffs that coil and uncoil like something alive, while Pete Sandoval's drumming swings from crushing slow passages to machine-gun blasts. "Fall from Grace" opens the album proper, "Day of Suffering" packs its chaos into under two minutes, and the title track "Blessed Are the Sick" lurches straight into "Leading the Rats."
Richard Brunelle's second guitar thickens every riff into something cavernous.
For anyone tracing the roots of extreme metal, it remains essential listening and one of the band's most atmospheric records, a dark and ornate counterpart to the raw speed of their debut.
