Mongo Santamaria’s Sofrito is a fiery celebration of Afro-Cuban rhythm meeting jazz-funk sophistication. Released in 1976, it captures the legendary percussionist at a moment when Latin grooves and dancefloor jazz were colliding in thrilling new ways.
By the mid-70s, Santamaria had already reshaped the landscape of Latin jazz, and Sofrito finds him embracing the era’s deeper funk currents without losing the heartbeat of Afro-Caribbean percussion. Produced during a fertile period of cross-genre experimentation, the album blends congas, horns, and electric keyboards into a sound that feels both streetwise and elegantly arranged.
The title track Sofrito stands as the album’s undeniable centerpiece - a simmering, hypnotic groove that gradually builds into a percussion-driven masterpiece beloved by DJs and crate diggers alike. Elsewhere, arrangements like O Mi Shango and the soulful ballad Como En Vietnam highlight Santamaria’s dynamic band, shifting effortlessly between spiritual jazz textures and fiery Latin rhythms.
