Molchat Doma's debut, S Krysh Nashikh Domov, is cold wave straight from the rooftops of Minsk, a 2017 album that introduced one of the most distinctive voices in modern post-punk.
The Belarusian trio of Egor Shkutko, Roman Komogortsev and Pavel Kozlov formed in 2017 and released this first album themselves, before a small German label picked it up and online word of mouth carried it far beyond Belarus. The band name translates as "houses are silent," and the title, roughly "from the roofs of our houses," suits music steeped in concrete, winter light and isolation. Sacred Bones later brought it to a much wider audience on vinyl.
The sound draws on Soviet-era new wave and the darker end of '80s synth-pop, with a drum machine ticking beneath chilly synths, wiry guitars and Shkutko's deep, deadpan baritone, all sung in Russian. "Kryshi" glides along on a cool, nocturnal pulse, "Tishina" stretches out into brooding atmosphere, and "Ya Ne Kommunist" adds a nervy, restless edge.
Dark yet danceable, with a heavy dose of gothic gloom, it's an album that sounds both out of time and perfectly of its moment. For anyone drawn to Joy Division or Kino, this is where Molchat Doma's story begins.
