Mogwai had already mastered the art of the quiet-loud epic when they made Rock Action, a 2001 album that found them shrinking the scale and widening the palette. This reissue is pressed on red vinyl.
After the towering noise of Young Team and Come On Die Young, the Glasgow band teamed up with producer Dave Fridmann, who recorded and mixed the album, and the result runs under 40 minutes. It was the first Mogwai record to use synthesizers, and its eight tracks feel richer and more colourful for it. The band liked the title so much they later named their own record label after it.
"Take Me Somewhere Nice" is the centrepiece, a rare vocal turn for the band with Stuart Braithwaite singing softly as the arrangement slowly blooms, and David Pajo adding backing vocals. "Dial: Revenge" features Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals singing in Welsh, a gorgeous left turn, while the sprawling "2 Rights Make 1 Wrong," which began life under the working title "Banjo," unfolds over more than nine minutes. Opener "Sine Wave" announces the new electronic textures.
Compact as it is, the album never feels slight, and its warmth has made it a quiet favourite among fans.
For anyone who knows Mogwai mainly for their volume, this is the record that shows their tenderness.
