Thirty years of Mogwai in one sitting: Happy Tears is the Glasgow band's career-spanning compilation, pressed on double vinyl with one black LP and one yellow.

Since forming in 1995, Mogwai have shaped post-rock in their own image, moving from whisper-quiet guitar figures to walls of noise that rattle ribcages, then on to synths and film scores. The set arrives on their own Rock Action label, itself thirty years old, and gathers thirteen tracks from across the catalogue alongside new material.

It opens with "Yes! I Am a Long Way from Home" from the 1997 debut Young Team, a slow-building statement of intent, then moves through landmarks like "Take Me Somewhere Nice," with its rare vocal tenderness, and the pulsing, synth-led "Remurdered," proof the band never stood still.

The headline addition is "Underground," a new collaboration with Iggy Pop, and there is a reworked take on an early classic featuring the Budapest Art Orchestra, with orchestration by Adam Wiltzie. A previously digital-only single also makes its way onto wax, giving vinyl collectors one more reason to file this next to the studio albums.

Three decades in, Mogwai still make quiet sound enormous and noise sound beautiful, and this is the neatest map yet of how they got here.
