Mogwai's Come On Die Young returns on grey double vinyl in a gatefold sleeve, complete with a download card, putting the Glasgow band's hushed 1999 second album back in circulation.
After the volume and fury of Mogwai Young Team, the band went looking for space. They headed to Tarbox Road Studios in New York State to work with producer Dave Fridmann, finishing sessions at CaVa in Glasgow, and drew on the sparse tension of Slint's Spiderland, Low and The Cure's Seventeen Seconds. It was also the first Mogwai record to feature multi-instrumentalist Barry Burns, and its title comes from a Glasgow gang.
The album opens with a sampled Iggy Pop interview over spindly guitar, a quiet statement that redefines what punk might mean. Cody offers a rare, fragile vocal, while Christmas Steps builds over ten minutes from murmur to full storm, the kind of slow-burn crescendo that became the band's signature. Ex-Cowboy, another song road-tested on the Young Team tour, rides a similarly patient arc.
Beautiful and occasionally devastating, this is the record where Mogwai learned that silence could hit as hard as noise. More than twenty-five years later, it still sounds like nowhere else on earth, and it rewards every late-night replay.
