Building Nothing Out of Something gathers the stray singles and B-sides from Modest Mouse's scrappy early years, and it plays more like a lost album than a clean-up job.

Released in 2000, between Night on the Sun and The Moon & Antarctica, the compilation collects songs first issued from 1996 to 1998 on singles, the Interstate 8 EP and the vinyl edition of The Lonesome Crowded West. It captures the restless, sprawling sound Isaac Brock, Eric Judy and Jeremiah Green built together long before the band reached the mainstream.

"Never Ending Math Equation" kicks off with a jittery, circling riff and Brock's yelped existential musings, while "Interstate 8" stretches out with the dusty, highway-bound melancholy that defined their early work. "Baby Blue Sedan" is a gentler, rattling road song, and "Other People's Lives" closes things over more than seven minutes of slow-building tension.

The joy here is in the rough edges, from wiry, scratchy guitars and abrupt shifts in tempo to lyrics that swing from bleak humour to genuine tenderness without warning.

For longtime fans it neatly fills the gaps between those classic full-length records, and for newcomers it is one of the best ways into the band's early catalogue, all on a single LP.
