Modest Mouse return with An Eraser and a Maze, a sprawling double LP that sounds like a band rebuilding itself without losing its strange, wounded heart.

Released in 2026 as the band's eighth studio album, it is their first since the death of founding drummer Jeremiah Green and their first independent release after more than two decades with Epic. Isaac Brock originally wrote much of the material for his side project Ugly Casanova before it grew into a full Modest Mouse record. He produced most of it alongside Jacknife Lee and Suzy Shinn, with further production from Justin Raisen and Jeremy Sherrer.

A rotating cast of drummers keeps the rhythms shifting, with Janet Weiss sitting in on the lead single. Brock has said the band played the songs together again and again until the parts clicked, and that some of them simply needed less guitar. You can hear that patience on Picking Dragons' Pockets, Third Side of the Moon and Life's a Dream, where the band's familiar nervous energy settles into roomier arrangements.

Fifteen songs across four sides give the album space to wander, which suits a band that has always done its best work on the scenic route. It honours everything Modest Mouse have been while hinting at what they might still become.
