American Psycho marked the Misfits rising from the grave in 1997, and this reissue dresses the album in a gatefold jacket with orange, red and black coloured vinyl.

It was the first Misfits album made without founder Glenn Danzig, arriving after bassist Jerry Only won the rights to the band's name and image. Only and his brother, guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, recruited singer Michale Graves and drummer Dr. Chud, and the new lineup cut the record for Geffen with Daniel Rey co-producing and Andy Wallace mixing. Graves brought a smoother, more melodic voice, and it gave the old horror-punk formula a fresh, anthemic snarl.

Dig Up Her Bones became the album's signature song, a brooding mid-tempo anthem with a hook built for shouting back at the stage. The title track is a short, furious blast, Abominable Dr. Phibes sets the B-movie mood right from the opening seconds, and Crimson Ghost tips its hat to the skull that has long served as the band's emblem.

The songs are stuffed with drive-in references and campy menace, but the playing is tight and muscular, and Wallace's mix gives everything genuine weight.

Halloween or not, this is horror punk with a grin and a full set of fangs.
