Miles Davis was assembling one of jazz's greatest bands when he played Paris in 1964, and Paris Jazz Festival, Salle Pleyel 10/1/1964 captures both of that day's concerts on two LPs in blue, white and red vinyl.
Wayne Shorter had only just joined the quintet, completing the line-up with Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums. This was the group that became known as the Second Great Quintet, and in Paris you can hear the chemistry forming in real time. Miles always shared a special bond with French audiences, and the band responds by stretching out with obvious freedom. The recordings have been newly remixed and remastered, and the sound is vivid and close.
The repertoire leans on standards and Miles favourites, but nothing sounds routine. "Autumn Leaves" opens the first concert at length, Hancock's harmonies shifting restlessly beneath the trumpet, while "So What" races at a tempo that leaves the 1959 original far behind. The second show includes a searching "Joshua" and a slow-burning "My Funny Valentine", with Williams' cymbals hissing and surging behind every phrase.
For anyone tracing how this band rewired modern jazz, it's an essential stop. The tricolour presentation makes a fitting salute to the city that embraced Miles so warmly.
