Miles in Berlin captures the moment Miles Davis' second great quintet clicked into place, live on stage at the Berliner Philharmonie in 1964. This reissue is pressed on 180 gram vinyl.
Wayne Shorter had only just joined on tenor saxophone, completing the lineup with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams that would dominate jazz for the rest of the decade. CBS released the recording in 1965, offering an early glimpse of the band that would go on to make E.S.P. and Miles Smiles.
Milestones opens at a furious clip, Williams pushing the tempo while Davis darts across the top. Autumn Leaves stretches past twelve minutes, the trumpet teasing the melody before Hancock pulls it into abstract, shimmering territory. So What and Walkin' are taken at full throttle, and Shorter's solos already hint at the sly, puzzle-box thinking he would bring to the group's studio records.
Carter and Williams play with a rubbery, conversational freedom that keeps every tune on the edge of reinvention, and the Berlin audience clearly knows it is hearing something special.
For anyone tracing how Davis moved from the hard bop of the fifties to the open forms of the mid-sixties, this concert is an essential stop. It is restless, brilliant and still thrillingly alive.
