Recorded live at New York's Philharmonic Hall in 1964, "Four" & More catches the Miles Davis quintet at a full sprint. This Dutch import is pressed on 180 gram vinyl.
Columbia split that night's music into two records: the ballads became My Funny Valentine, and the fast material landed here, released in 1966 with Teo Macero producing. The band pairs George Coleman's tenor saxophone with the young rhythm section that would redefine jazz piano and drumming, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and a teenage Tony Williams.
So What, the cool modal centrepiece of Kind of Blue, is taken at a breakneck tempo that turns calm into combustion. Walkin' gets the same treatment, Williams driving everything with ride-cymbal fury while Carter's bass races to keep pace. Seven Steps to Heaven shows off the group's tight, punchy unison lines, and There Is No Greater Love gives Hancock room to sparkle.
Davis plays with a fierce, open-horn urgency, pushing his phrases right to the edge, and Coleman answers with fluent, hard-charging solos of his own.
It remains one of the most exhilarating live records in the Davis catalogue, a snapshot of a band testing how fast and free it could go just months before Wayne Shorter arrived. Turn it up and hold on.
