E.S.P. is where Miles Davis's second great quintet first walked into the studio together, and it still sounds like five musicians reading each other's minds, due on 180 gram black vinyl as a Holland import.

Released in 1965 and produced by Irving Townsend, the album introduced the line-up that would redefine small-group jazz for the rest of the decade: Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass and a teenage Tony Williams on drums. Shorter had only just joined, yet his writing is all over it. Every member except Williams has a composer credit, and the leader seems happy to let the young guns steer.

Shorter's title track bolts out of the gate with a restless, slippery melody, while Hancock's "Little One" hangs in the air on hushed, impressionistic chords. "Agitation" lives up to its name, Williams pushing and pulling the time until it feels elastic, and Shorter's "Iris" slows everything to a gorgeous, unhurried ballad. Throughout, Davis plays with a pared-back, almost conversational restraint, leaving space where earlier bands would have filled it.

This is the opening chapter of one of the most celebrated runs in jazz, the bridge between hard bop and the freer music that followed. Spin it once for the solos and again just for Carter and Williams.
