In his final months, Miles Davis set out to capture the sound of the New York streets drifting up to his apartment window, and Doo-Bop is where that idea landed.

Early in 1991 he asked Russell Simmons to find him young hip hop producers, which led him to Easy Mo Bee. Only six pieces were finished when Davis died later that year, so Warner Bros. had Easy Mo Bee build more around unreleased trumpet recordings from the Rubberband era. Released in 1992, it became his final studio album, and its title neatly mashes together doo-wop and bebop.

The formula was bold for its time, with Davis's trumpet slicing over boom-bap drums, chopped samples and rap verses. "Mystery" sets the mood from the opening bars, "The Doo-Bop Song" gives the album its name, and "High Speed Chase" and "Fantasy" show how naturally the posthumous tracks sit beside the rest.

Critics were sharply divided at the time, yet the album won a Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental Performance and topped Billboard's jazz albums chart.

Heard today, it plays as a fascinating snapshot of jazz and hip hop meeting halfway, and a fitting last word from a musician who never stopped chasing whatever came next. For anyone filling in the late chapters of his catalogue, it belongs right after Tutu and Amandla.
