Diesel and Dust is the 1987 album that carried Midnight Oil's urgent politics from Australian pubs to stages around the world, presented here in remastered form.
The record grew out of a 1986 tour through remote Aboriginal communities alongside the Warumpi Band, an experience that left the band confronting land rights and dispossession in their own country with fresh urgency. Peter Garrett's commanding voice and the band's taut, ringing guitars gave those themes real force, while producer Warne Livesey helped shape their most focused and accessible set. It is angry music, but never preachy, built on hooks as much as conviction.
"Beds Are Burning" is the landmark, a thunderous call for land to be returned to its traditional owners that became an anthem far beyond Australia. "The Dead Heart" pulses with stark, rhythmic power, while "Put Down That Weapon" carries a Cold War chill. "Dreamworld" is the most propulsive moment, bristling with nervous energy and a chorus built for a packed room.
Decades later, the album's questions about land, justice and the environment feel as pressing as ever, and its sound remains instantly recognizable.
This remastered pressing is a fitting way to revisit a cornerstone of Australian rock and one of the great political records of the decade.
