The voice behind Starship's biggest hits takes on the holiday songbook with A Classic Christmas, Mickey Thomas' first Christmas album, pressed on red and green vinyl.
Thomas first made his name singing Fooled Around and Fell in Love with the Elvin Bishop Band in the mid-seventies, then joined Jefferson Starship in 1979 and later fronted Starship through three number one singles. For this 2024 set he headed to Nashville, where producer Dan Frizsell recorded him with a tight band at East Iris Studio A and Ronnie's Place.
It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year kicks things off at a brisk, upbeat clip, sleigh bells and vibes included. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas slows to a tender glow, and White Christmas closes the album with crooner-style elegance. The arrangements tip their hats to the classic recordings by Judy Garland, Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby without simply copying them.
Thomas' powerful, high-flying voice is in fine shape, and he sings these standards with obvious affection. The band, featuring drummer Evan Hutchings and bassist Mark Hill, keeps everything warm and unfussy.
It is a polished, cheerful seasonal record built for tree-trimming and family gatherings, and a festive treat for Starship fans who have long wanted to hear him sing these songs.
