Mercyland's self-titled album finally gives shape to the earliest incarnation of the band, raw Athens, Georgia post-punk recorded years before David Barbe ever stood behind Bob Mould in Sugar.
Barbe fronted this trio through the mid-to-late 1980s, and it's a rowdier, more traditionally punk animal than anything he'd later make his name with, urgent and messy in the specific way that only comes from being a genuinely pissed-off kid with a guitar and not much patience for polish. This self-titled collection gathers that earliest era before the band moved on to the more developed material eventually released decades later as We Never Lost a Single Game, making it the true origin document rather than the more accomplished sequel.
Amerigod opens on a squeal of feedback and never really calms down from there. Fall of the City is the record's most relentless moment, machine-gun drumming under jagged, distorted chords that sound exactly as unhinged as the title suggests. Vomit Clown earns its ridiculous name honestly, two minutes of DIY brilliance that splits the difference between The Blasters and The Ramones without ever feeling like a pastiche of either.
Long before Sugar made Barbe a name outside Athens, this is where he was actually learning how to be furious in under three minutes. It holds up.
