Menahan Street Band's Make the Road by Walking is the sound of Brooklyn soul musicians playing purely for the love of it, and this LP comes with a download card.
Guitarist and producer Thomas Brenneck gathered players from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, El Michels Affair, Antibalas and the Budos Band to cut instrumentals in the bedroom of his apartment on Menahan Street in Bushwick. Released in 2008, the debut caught the Daptone family at a creative peak, loose, confident and bursting with ideas.
The title track had already found a second life when Jay-Z built "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is)..." around its triumphant horns, but the whole album is just as rich. "Tired of Fighting" smolders with slow-burning brass, "Home Again" glows with nostalgic warmth, and "Karina" drifts on a gentle, cinematic groove that feels made for a long drive at dusk.
This is instrumental soul with a storyteller's instincts, every horn line and guitar figure doing the work a lyric would, all wrapped in a warm, live-in-the-room feel. Not a word is sung, yet nothing feels missing.
For crate diggers and anyone who loves soul with real heart, it's a modern classic that rewards every spin, and a key piece of the Daptone story.
