Brooklyn's Menahan Street Band return with Illusions, their fourth album, and this time the horns have company in the form of string arrangements by Brazilian great Arthur Verocai.

The instrumental soul collective has long been a quiet engine of modern retro-soul, backing Charles Bradley and lending Jay-Z the sample behind "Roc Boys." Guitarist Tommy Brenneck produced the record at his own Diamond West Records, reuniting a crew including trumpeter Dave Guy, drummer Homer Steinweiss, bassist Nick Movshon and Leon Michels, players with decades of shared history between them.

Opener and first single "Palace of Illusions" sets the scene, Verocai's strings sweeping around the band's warm horn lines. Brenneck has called the pairing a total dream, and titles like "Aurora Was Her Name" and "Sound of Distant Thunder" hint at the widescreen, cinematic mood of the whole set, all built on the dusty groove the band does so well. The songs were written and recorded quickly, with no time for overthinking, and that urgency keeps everything loose and alive.

With no lyrics steering the story, the music leaves room for your own film to run, which is exactly the point. It is a record for slow Sunday mornings and long evening drives, and a proud new chapter for one of soul's most dependable bands.
