Hostile Ambient Takeover is Melvins at their most gleefully contrary, a 2002 album that swings from sludge to noise to drawn-out drone, now back on pink vinyl.

By the early 2000s, Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover had spent nearly two decades doing exactly as they pleased, and this record, made with bassist Kevin Rutmanis for Mike Patton's Ipecac label, keeps that streak alive. Producer Toshi Kasai captured a band stretching out, and Tool guitarist Adam Jones even turns up to add synthesiser textures. Each song was later issued on its own limited 7-inch single, which tells you how seriously they take the art of being strange.

"Black Stooges" is over in about thirty seconds, a blast of attitude rather than a song. "Dr. Geek" and "Little Judas Chongo" deliver compact, heavy riffing with that trademark lurch, while "The Anti-Vermin Seed" closes the album with a sprawling epic of more than fifteen minutes that tests your patience and then rewards it.

There is humour all the way through, but also real weight, with Crover's drums landing like furniture falling down a staircase.

For anyone who loves heavy music that refuses to behave, this is a pink-tinted reminder that nobody does it quite like Melvins.
