Megadeth's Rust in Peace is thrash metal sharpened to a surgical point, and this limited edition 180-gram pressing gives every lightning-fast riff the weight and bite it deserves.

Released in 1990, the band's fourth album introduced guitarist Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Menza alongside Dave Mustaine and David Ellefson, and that lineup clicked instantly. Mustaine co-produced with Mike Clink, and the result is the most precise and ambitious record of Megadeth's career, a high-water mark for technical metal that guitarists still study note by note, more than three decades on.

Opener "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due" lurches between razor-wire thrash and a flamenco-tinged acoustic interlude, all wrapped around a furious sermon on religious conflict. "Hangar 18" stacks solo upon solo from Mustaine and Friedman over a tale of alien bodies and government secrets. "Tornado of Souls" carries one of the most celebrated guitar breaks in metal, and "Five Magics" spins fantasy lyrics into a whirlwind of shifting riffs.

Vic Rattlehead and a room full of world leaders inspecting an alien still make for one of the great thrash covers, and it looks right at home at full size. Spin it loud and the precision becomes something you can feel in your chest, riff after riff, solo after solo.
