Countdown to Extinction is the 1992 album that carried Megadeth from thrash heroes into the mainstream, spread here across a double LP.

Coming off the technical fury of Rust in Peace, Dave Mustaine and his most celebrated lineup, guitarist Marty Friedman, bassist David Ellefson and drummer Nick Menza, chose a different path. Working with co-producer Max Norman, they trimmed the songs down, sharpened the hooks and gave the riffs more room to land, all without losing the precision that made their name.

The gamble paid off. Symphony of Destruction became their signature song, its lurching, mid-tempo riff and chant-along chorus instantly recognisable. Sweating Bullets is a darkly comic portrait of paranoia, Mustaine snarling through a conversation with himself, while Foreclosure of a Dream and Skin O' My Teeth balance political bite with tightly wound musicianship. Friedman's melodic, exotic-sounding leads are all over the record, adding colour to Mustaine's relentless rhythmic attack.

Behind the accessibility, the lyrics keep a sharp edge, tackling war, endangered species and economic hardship with Mustaine's trademark bite.

More than three decades on, it remains a cornerstone of 1990s metal and a gateway record for countless fans, and the double-LP layout gives every side room to hit hard, from the opening crunch to the closing fade.
