Sugar brings Mayday Parade's three-part saga to a sweet and bittersweet close, and it may be the most quietly confident record the Tallahassee band has made.
Released in 2026, the band's tenth studio album completes a trilogy that began with Sweet and continued with Sad, both released in 2025, and its ten songs tie those moods together. Longtime collaborators Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount return behind the desk, keeping the guitars bright and the hooks front and center while giving Derek Sanders' voice plenty of room.
"Sweet Sad Sugar" acts as the trilogy's thesis, a nostalgic, syncopated nod to their early days in Tallahassee, while "Weekend Music" delivers the kind of sunny, heart-on-sleeve chorus the band has always done best. "Lying to Myself" adds urgency and bite, and closer "What Happens Next" leaves the door deliberately open, a fitting end to a story about growing up without growing out of it.
Nearly two decades after their debut, the band still writes as though every song might be someone's favorite, and that sincerity is the secret ingredient.
For fans who have followed every chapter, this is the satisfying final page, and for newcomers it is a warm, catchy argument for why emo and pop-punk refuse to fade away.
