Max Richter turns the world of Margaret Atwood's MaddAddam trilogy into a standalone listening work on While The Flood Rages, pressed here as a limited clear 2LP UK import.
The album grows out of MaddAddam, the ballet Richter created with choreographer Wayne McGregor, co-commissioned by the National Ballet of Canada and the Royal Opera House. It marks the third major collaboration between the pair after Infra and Woolf Works, though Richter shaped this record as a companion piece rather than a straight score. Its concerns are ecological collapse and runaway technology, set against the stubborn warmth of human connection.
Recorded at Studio Richter Mahr, the woodland base in Oxfordshire he runs with artist Yulia Mahr, the music is built around a recurring piano motif. Choir and orchestra carry the emotional weight, while the electronics go somewhere darker, using processed ocean recordings and manipulated gunfire as rhythm. Wave After Wave sets the tide in motion, Tell The Bees brings a folk-like tenderness, and Data Ballistics leans into the electronic side before Now We Can Sing, the lead single, closes the record with something close to hope.
It plays as one continuously evolving piece, best heard in a single sitting.
For listeners who found Richter through Sleep or The Blue Notebooks, this is a bold and beautifully unsettling new chapter.
