Mad Season is the sound of Matchbox Twenty going widescreen, trading post-grunge grit for horns, strings and big pop ambition in 2000, here pressed on blue vinyl.
Their debut had made them one of the biggest rock bands in America, and Rob Thomas had just added a mammoth hit with Santana to his name. Rather than repeat themselves, the band reunited with producer Matt Serletic and reached for a grander, glossier sound. Thomas's songs got more personal too, wrestling with fame, relationships and the strange loneliness of success.
"Bent" gave the band their first Billboard Hot 100 number one, a desperate plea wrapped in a soaring chorus. "If You're Gone" swaps crunch for a laid-back sway and warm brass, becoming one of the defining soft-rock songs of its era. The title track "Mad Season" broods and stomps, while closing epic "You Won't Be Mine" unfolds with sweeping strings.
The arrangements are lush without losing the band's backbone. Horn sections pop up where you least expect them, the guitars still bite when they need to, and Thomas sings with a raw, rasping urgency that keeps everything human.
For anyone who grew up with these songs on the radio, this blue pressing lands like a postcard from a very good year.
