Massive Attack's Protection is the sound of Bristol after dark, a 1994 album of slow-motion beats, aching voices and widescreen calm, presented on 180 gram vinyl.

Following the landmark debut Blue Lines was never going to be easy, but Protection proved the collective could deepen their sound rather than repeat it. Produced with Nellee Hooper, it keeps the dub weight and hip-hop backbone while adding more space and cinematic strings, helping define what would soon be called trip-hop and setting a template many would follow.

The title track, sung by Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl, is a nearly eight-minute study in devotion and restraint, and she returns for the gentle "Better Things." Tricky trades lines with 3D on the smoky, hypnotic "Karmacoma," while Nicolette's otherworldly voice gives "Sly" its eerie, swaying beauty, carried by Craig Armstrong's orchestral arrangement.

Horace Andy's unmistakable falsetto adds roots-reggae soul, and the instrumental passages let the mood settle and breathe between the vocal pieces, like pauses for breath between verses.

On heavyweight vinyl, the deep bass and spacious mix feel especially immersive. It remains one of the defining records of 1990s British music, as rewarding at three in the morning as it is on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
