Mary J. Blige arrived fully formed on What's the 411?, the 1992 debut that fused hip-hop beats with church-raised soul and earned her the title Queen of Hip-Hop Soul. This edition spreads it across two silver vinyl LPs.
Signed to Uptown Records as a teenager from Yonkers, Blige brought a raw, emotionally direct voice that set her apart from the polished R&B of the day. Producers including Dave 'Jam' Hall, Mark Morales, Cory Rooney and DeVante Swing built tracks around hard drums and well-chosen samples, giving her vocals plenty of grit to push against. The album topped the R&B albums chart and reached the top ten of the Billboard 200.
Real Love became a number one R&B hit and remains one of the defining songs of the decade, its bouncing beat impossible to sit still to. You Remind Me, her first single, also topped the R&B chart, while Reminisce shows off her gift for longing, bittersweet storytelling. Her version of Rufus and Chaka Khan's Sweet Thing pays tribute to an idol with real tenderness.
Guest spots from Busta Rhymes and Grand Puba bring extra hip-hop credibility to the set.
