Marty Robbins saddled up again for More Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs, and this limited 180-gram Spanish import adds bonus tracks to the original eleven.
Coming in 1960 on the heels of the hugely successful Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs, the sequel had a tough act to follow, yet it more than holds its own. Producer Don Law recorded Robbins at Bradley Studios in Nashville with an ace crew that included guitarists Grady Martin and Hank Garland and pianist Floyd Cramer, keeping the arrangements lean so the stories could breathe.
The opener San Angelo is a sweeping, five-minute frontier saga, sung with that trademark quaver that made Robbins the finest storyteller in western music. Five Brothers, from the pen of Tompall Glaser, gallops along at a brisk clip, Song of the Bandit nods to the singing cowboy tradition of its writer Bob Nolan, and Little Joe the Wrangler turns an old trail ballad into a tender campfire elegy.
There's a dusty, wide-open quality to the whole record, the sound of a singer who truly believed in the romance of the Old West and could make you believe it too.
For anyone who loved the first Gunfighter set, this is essential follow-up listening, and a handsome pressing for the shelf.
