Exotica Vol. III [Sky Blue] Vinyl

Exotica Vol. III is Martin Denny's third dip into the genre he essentially invented, the same crew of loyal players who made Forbidden Island and Quiet Village work returning to conjure imagined tropical worlds from a Honolulu lounge stage.

Denny built exotica almost by accident, adding bird calls and jungle sound effects into his arrangements to entertain hotel bar patrons, and it turned into a genuine genre, birthing an entire midcentury fascination with a fantasy Polynesia that owed more to Hollywood than actual field recording. This lineup was the real engine behind that sound: Harvey Ragsdale's upright bass, Julius Wechter's vibraphone, later a member of the storied session collective the Wrecking Crew, and Augie Colon, whose percussion work earned him the title Grandfather of Hawaii Percussion. Three albums deep by this point, the formula hadn't calcified into repetition, still finding new corners of the same imagined tropics to explore.

Jungle River Boat opens the record drifting on exactly the loungey, birdcall-dotted atmosphere the genre demands. Caravan gets reworked through Denny's signature exotic lens, familiar melody filtered through vibes and percussion until it sounds genuinely otherworldly. Congo Train carries real percussive drive beneath the mood, and Moon of Manakoora closes things on the kind of dreamy, moonlit fantasy the whole exotica movement was chasing.

A genre invented almost by accident, still sounding exactly as transporting on its third outing as it did on the first.
